Sand Ship Discovery
The Sand Ship Discovery is a 1966 Kaiser-Jeep CJ-5 that Loren and Patty Upton drove around the world in the 1980s. The couple’s five-year, 56,000-mile journey included jungles, mountains, swamps, the Sahara desert, and remote locations. They also crossed the Darien Gap in Panama, a 125-mile route of jungle, swamps, canyons, and bandits, three times, making them the first people to do so entirely by land. The Uptons drove without GPS or a cellphone and faced challenges like breakdowns and border crossings. Their journey earned them a Guinness World Record.
